A Town with Deep Roots
Kaw City was founded in 1903 along the banks of the Arkansas River, named in honor of the Kaw (Kanza) Nation. The community grew into a bustling small town, complete with schools, churches, shops, and friendly neighborhoods. Life revolved around agriculture, oil, and the river, which provided both opportunity and hardship through frequent floods.
By the 1960s, Kaw City had an established identity as the heart of the Kaw region. But change was on the horizon. When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned Kaw Dam, the town found itself directly in the floodplain of the future reservoir.
The Hard Choice
Residents faced a wrenching decision: abandon the town entirely or relocate it to higher ground. After years of debate, the choice was made to move the community about two miles west. The government bought out homes and businesses, and a new Kaw City was platted in the early 1970s.
Families salvaged what they could — church pews, school memorabilia, even entire houses that were lifted and hauled to the new site. Yet much was left behind. By 1976, as Kaw Lake began to fill, the streets of Old Kaw City disappeared under water.
A Submerged Memory
For many families, the move was bittersweet. While the new Kaw City offered modern infrastructure and safety from flooding, the loss of the original townsite was deeply felt. Cemeteries had to be relocated, and landmarks like the old school gymnasium and main street businesses were erased from the landscape.
Yet the memory of Old Kaw City lives on. During years of drought or exceptionally low water levels, remnants of the old town reemerge — sidewalks, foundations, and fragments of buildings, ghostly reminders of a community that once thrived. Locals often venture out to walk the exposed ruins, sharing stories of where the café once stood or which corner held the gas station.
Stories of Resilience
The relocation of Kaw City is remembered as both a loss and a triumph of resilience. Residents rebuilt their lives, businesses reopened, and the town endured. Today’s Kaw City embraces its role as the hub of lake life while honoring the heritage of the original site. Annual events, including the Ultimate Eagle Watch, continue to tie the town’s identity to the lake.
Preserving the Past
Local historians and the Kaw Lake Association have worked to preserve the story of Old Kaw City. Photographs, oral histories, and artifacts are displayed in community spaces, ensuring that new generations understand the sacrifices made to create the lake.
